The Internal Medicine Emergency Unit of Perpetuo Socorro Hospital centres its activity of the overall care of sick adults. With an integrating and versatile focus, it provides care to the multi-pathological – multi symptomatic patient, alongside all prevalent illnesses in the inpatient and outpatient fields.
This unit becomes a key intermediary in hospital excellence that guarantees the necessary expectations of patients and their families through a technical-care quality focused on urgent pathology.
Services
- Receipt and classification of patients via a computerised triage system that guarantees care priority in accordance with therapeutic needs and the resources available.
- Medical consultation and advice based on a clinical history that implies: Productive questioning, physical examination, relevant diagnostic studies, evaluation of results, electronic records and medical decision making.
- Modern I.T. system that enables the recording, checking and monitoring of the patient throughout his or her stay in the service, along with the drafting of the discharge report and processing, if necessary, of his or her admittance or transfer.
- Welfare monitoring system: cardiac monitoring, pulse oximetry, breathing rate, blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, glycaemia.
- Continual hospital observation over 24 hours.
- Diagnostic imaging 24 hours a day/365 days a year: Digital radiology, portable radiology equipment, Doppler ultrasound, Orthopantography, Multi-sliced CT Scanners.
- Clinical Analysis – Haematology – Haemotherapy 24 hours a day/365 days a year.
- Pharyngeal Test for rapid diagnosis of bacterial pharyngitis.
- Invasive techniques for diagnosis and therapy: Channelling of peripheral and central arterial-venous lines, Paracentesis, Thoracentesis, Lumbar Puncture, Percutaneous Cricotomy, Percutaneous Tracheostomy, direct Laryngoscopy, orotracheal-nasotracheal
- Intubation, and bladder, rectal and nasogastrical catheterization.
- Administration of parenteral – oral – inhaled medication.
- Controlled sedation and analgesia for invasive, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Control of surgical and non-surgical airways.
- Invasive mechanical ventilation – Synchronised and non-synchronised electric cardioversion – Electrocardiogram – External cardiac pacemaker.
- Referral to other specialities: cardiology, pneumology, neurology, otolaryngology, general and digestive surgery, ophthalmology, dermatology, haematology, urology, etc.

Equipment
- Medical office equipped with: computer with Emergency management system; negatoscope, otoscope, ventilator, vacuum and suction system, examination light, scales, wash basin and telephone.
- Equipped triage room: integrated Emergency system computer, sphygmomanometer, pulse oximeter, otic thermometer, glucometer, telephone.
- Eight observation cubicles, four of which have articulating beds. All of which have ventilators, high flow oxygen and vacuum, and continuous monitoring screens.
- Computerised central reception to check and monitor patients.
- Electrocardiograph.
- Cardiac arrest trolley.
- Monophasic defibrillator with external pacemaker.
- Continuous fluid and medication infusion equipment.
